Gmail for Mobile 2.0
Gmail has more than 50 million users and rising. But when it first launched in April 2004, it was very hard to have a Gmail account. Gmail invites auctioned on Ebay for up to $199. Now, it’s free to everybody and each Gmail account has almost – limitless (7+GB) capacity and many gadgets like Docs and Calendar are added to Gmail.
Google launched Gmail for Mobile – m.gmail.com in December 2005 and you could get your Gmail messages from your mobile web browser. A downloadable Gmail application for java enabled phones first launched in November 2006 and this application speed Gmail use on mobile devices.
Last week, Google has launched version 2.0 of Gmail for Mobile for J2ME-supported devices such as Android, Nokia and BlackBerry phones. New version is faster and supports more languages (35 languages). It has offline support which lets users compose emails and save whenever they want or reach GSM signal or WiFi connection. Switching between multiple accounts, opening message attachments like MS Word documents and PDF files and shortcut keys are other useful fetures of the new version. I’ve installed the new version on my Nokia N95 phone and i think it’s a solid,handy and necessary application for digital nomads like me.
