When used in business, the term “Niche” is used to describe fresh, virgin and profitable…

Niche markets don’t exist themselves everytime. In some situations, you must create your niche markets by identifying demands (needs and wishs of your customers) which are not met by your competitors.

It’s interesting that even in a super-niche like sailing + blogging entrepreneurs face tough competition. In the case of sailblogs there is this other site called http://www.tripsailor.com . Comparing both sites they basically offer the same services, but they take a niche within the niche. Sailblogs is a premium blog hoster and charges a few bucks a month for it’s services, whereas TripSailor offers all services for free. The question is how could one provider survive in such small niche, when the competitor offers it’s services for free.

Thanks for your comment. You’re right; competition is everywhere and it’s hard to compete
but SailBlogs has two basic options for their customers. Free account + SailBlogs’ own Ads vs. Paid Account (without ads). I think that the second option may be suitable for some sailors. Sailing is a pricey hobby and all of the hobby – sailors i know earn over – average salaries. Some of them may want to show ads on your blogs, because they don’t need to earn a few bucks from their hobbies. So this is a niche advantage :) for SailBlogs. The answer for your question is; always making innovations, releasing new services that make customers happier is the key strategy to survive in all markets.Think that, what would these to companies do if they had more than 100 competitors?
